Earth's Polar Auroral Arcs. This sequence of images was obtained by one of the two Dynamics Explorer satellites launched together on 3rd August 1981. These satellites carried experiments study the flow of solar energy and matter from space through the Earth's magnetic field (NASA Media Archives).
